From invitation to your first movie.

Vupl is an independent client for Plex. It opens the movies and shows someone has shared with your Plex account.

  1. Sign in.Open Vupl and choose “Continue with Plex.” Use the account your friend invited. New to Plex? You can create an account on Plex’s sign-in page or from its invitation email.
  2. Accept your invitation.Check the person and included libraries, then choose “Accept & open.” If there’s more than one invitation, choose the one you want first. If you’ve already accepted a single invitation, Vupl opens that library for you.
  3. Choose something to watch.Your library opens as soon as it loads. Pick a movie or show and press Play. Settings can wait.

Earlier versions may show “Someone shared with me” or a separate “Browse library” step. Need the app first? See installation options. Already signed in? Look in Account → People & sharing → Library invitations.

I can’t find my invitation

Check the Plex username shown in Vupl. In versions with “Copy username,” copy it and send it to your friend so they can check who they invited. Otherwise, find it in your Plex account settings.

If you recognize a different account, choose “Switch account.” Signing in with Apple, Google or email can lead to different Plex accounts if they were not linked. An empty invitation list alone does not prove you used the wrong account.

A friend request is separate from library access. You can watch a shared library without accepting a friend request.

I accepted, but the library won’t open

If Vupl says your access is saved, choose “Try again” or “Open library” to open it. If acceptance has not been confirmed, choose “Check again” first. You do not need another invitation just because a connection failed.

If it still will not open, ask the person who shared it to check that their server is running and accessible away from their home. You do not need to change their router or server settings yourself.

I’m setting up a television

Open Vupl on the television and scan its sign-in QR code with your phone’s camera. Sign in on Plex’s website using the account your friend invited. You only need a browser on the phone; you do not need to install Vupl there.

If your version shows a four-character sign-in code, you can also open plex.tv/link in a browser and enter that code. It signs in the same TV as the QR code.

Keep Vupl’s sign-in screen open on the TV. It updates automatically when Plex confirms sign-in. If the session expires, start sign-in again to get a fresh QR code.

The library opens, but a video won’t play

Your library access and the video connection are separate. Keep your account signed in, try again, and use Vupl’s playback help if the problem continues. You do not need to repeat invitation setup.

For remote video playback, Plex requires the library owner to have Plex Pass, or the viewer to have Plex Pass or Remote Watch Pass. This also applies to third-party clients. If the owner has Plex Pass, their shared viewers do not each need to buy a pass for that server. Local playback has different requirements.

Vupl does not determine subscription coverage from a loaded library. Check Plex’s current playback requirements when a subscription message appears.

Plex manages accounts, sharing and applicable remote-playback requirements. See Plex’s invitation guide and remote-playback requirements.

Help a friend get started.

Send library access, a way to install Vupl, and a short explanation they can follow on their own.

  1. Invite their own Plex account. In Plex’s Manage Library Access, choose “Grant Library Access.” Check their username or email and select only the libraries you intend to share. Friendship is optional.
  2. Check access from away.If they will watch from another home, make sure your server is running and Remote Access is working. A successful connection on your own Wi-Fi does not establish that theirs will work.
  3. Send the invitation and setup guide.Plex sends an email and offers a copy of its acceptance link. Send that separately with the appropriate Vupl installation or testing instructions for their device.

Edit this message if you like, then copy it into your conversation with your friend. Nothing is sent from this page.

My friend is stuck

Ask which Plex username they are using and whether Vupl says the invitation is pending, access is saved, or the library has loaded. In versions that offer “Ask for help,” they can preview and copy a short explanation for you.

Check the account and selected libraries in Plex before sending another invitation. If access is accepted but the library cannot open, check your server and Remote Access. Only a video playing on their device confirms that watching works.

The setup guide does not grant access or install Vupl. Keep your password and sign-in codes private; friends use their own accounts.

Install Vupl

Use the download or testing invitation provided by Vupl for your device. A Plex library invitation grants library access; it does not install Vupl.

iPhone, iPad, Mac or Apple Vision Pro

Vupl for iPhone, iPad, Mac and Apple Vision Pro is available now on the App Store.

Windows

Vupl for Windows is available now on the Microsoft Store. Open the listing on your Windows PC to install Vupl with automatic updates.

Development builds are available as the x64 installer for Intel and AMD PCs or the ARM64 installer. Development version 1.0.4 requires Windows 11 22H2 or later and includes the required runtimes. Installers are hosted on our official GitHub releases page, with SHA-256 checksums.

These installers are signed with our self-signed development certificate (Vupl Development Only), which is not publicly trusted. Windows may show an unrecognized publisher warning. The Microsoft Store provides a Store-verified alternative. Direct installations update manually, install for your Windows account, and keep settings and downloads when updated or uninstalled. The standalone and Microsoft Store editions have separate app data; installing one does not migrate your existing library downloads.

Apple TV

Vupl for Apple TV is available now on the App Store. Open the App Store on your Apple TV and search for Vupl to install. A Plex library invitation grants access to media; install Vupl separately.

Xbox

Vupl for Xbox is available now on the Microsoft Store. Open the Store on your Xbox One or Xbox Series X|S and search for Vupl. Store updates keep your existing app data.

Android phone, tablet or TV

Vupl for Android phones and tablets (Android 10 and later) is in beta testing on Google Play. Join the Android beta: join the tester group, opt in on Google Play, then install Vupl from the Play Store. There is no public Google Play listing yet.

The Android TV app is a separate build in Google Play testing alongside the phone and tablet beta. If Google Play does not offer it on your TV yet, contact support.

Let Vupl pick something.

Choose “Surprise me” on Home for a pick from your library. Leave “Any genre” selected for a mix, or choose a genre to narrow the next pick.

“Something else” gives you another pick in the same genre. Choose “Any genre” to open up the choices again. You decide when to start watching.

Report a problem

A short description and a few details help make a report useful:

  • Your device model and operating-system version.
  • The Vupl version and build number, if available.
  • What you were doing, what you expected and what happened instead.
  • Whether the issue happens every time, and the steps that reproduce it.
  • The exact error message or a screenshot with private information removed.

For a TestFlight build, you can also use Apple's beta feedback tools. Please do not send Plex passwords, authorization tokens, sign-in codes or private server addresses. Crop or hide account names, library details and other people's information before attaching screenshots.

Plex connection & library access

Vupl connects to the movie and television libraries your Plex account can access. It does not include a catalog or grant access to someone else's server.

  • Confirm that your server is online and that the same Plex account can open the library in Plex.
  • Check the selected server and Plex Home profile in Vupl's account and connection settings.
  • For a shared library, ask its owner to confirm your access. Plex permissions and any applicable Plex playback requirements still apply.

Contact Vupl for problems with the app's connection flow. Plex account recovery, server permissions and Plex subscriptions are managed by Plex or the server owner; Plex Support covers those services.

Playback & subtitles

Video keeps stopping to load

In versions that offer it, choose “Use automatic quality” in Playback settings. It sets your preferred away-from-home starting quality to 1080p / 8 Mbps and adjusts when supported. Your home quality, mobile-data limit and language choices stay saved; automatic adjustment also applies to converted video at home.

If playback still cannot start, ask the library owner to check the server and remote connection. Changing quality cannot fix missing access or an unavailable server.

For a playback issue, include whether it happens on your home network or a remote connection, the chosen quality, and the video, audio or subtitle format shown in the app's media details. Share only the details relevant to the problem.

Playback can depend on your server, connection, media format, device and output equipment. A source's HDR or surround label does not guarantee that every device and output combination will reproduce it.

For subtitle problems, mention the subtitle format, whether the track came from Plex or an imported file, and whether the issue affects appearance, position, timing or availability. Do not send copyrighted video or a full subtitle file with an initial report.

Beta availability

Vupl is free. Vupl for iPhone, iPad, Mac, Apple TV and Apple Vision Pro is available now on the App Store. Vupl for Windows and Xbox is available on the Microsoft Store. Vupl for Android phones and tablets is in beta testing on Google Play, and testers can join the Android beta now. Android TV is also in Google Play testing.

If you already have an invited build, use the contact above for feedback. This page does not enroll you in a beta or confirm a TestFlight invitation. Release information will appear on the Vupl website when it is available.

Privacy & data questions

The Vupl privacy policy explains Plex authorization, device storage, lists, Watch Together, website hosting and support correspondence. Email the publisher for questions or requests about information you have sent to Vupl.

Vupl sign-out does not delete your Plex account, cloud lists or watched history. Plex-held information is managed through Plex. To remove Vupl's data from a device, delete support correspondence or delete your Plex account, see Delete your data or account.

Connect a Jellyfin server

Jellyfin is available in the latest supported updates. Check your platform’s release status first; Apple 1.1 is still in review.

  1. Get the complete reachable server address from its owner, including any base path. The owner manages remote access, HTTPS or VPN connectivity.
  2. Choose Jellyfin in Vupl’s connection screen. Enter that address and use your own Jellyfin account. Use HTTPS when available; a plain HTTP address requires explicit trust.
  3. Sign in with your username and password, or approve Quick Connect on an already signed-in device when the server enables it.
  4. Keep Plex connected too if you want combined browsing. Filter by source or choose an available copy; viewing progress and download access remain with the selected server.

A friend needs their own account on your Jellyfin server. Sharing a Plex library does not create a Jellyfin account. Plex Lists, People and Watch Together remain Plex-only features.
